Toggle switch how-to

16.06.2019 10:59

When it comes to Toggle switches, you might read few acronyms like for example SPST, SPDT, DPST, and DPDT.
In the following diagrams i will give all informations and drawings about the basic switch variations.

A toggle switch consists of a knob that pushs/throws the common signal contact to one or more poles or just to disconnect the signal from the neutral center position by moving the knob up.
Toggle swichtes often are specificated with a number of Poles and a number of Throws. Poles means the number of circuits swichted by the toggle and throw means the extreme positions of the toggle.
In the following diagrams I explain the most important abbreviations: SPST, SPDT, DPST, and DPDT.

SPST Single Pole Single Throw

SPDT Single Pole Double Throw

DPST Double Single Double Throw

DPDT Double Pole Double Throw
